Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a regenerative approach that uses a concentrated portion of your own blood to support natural repair. Your platelets are rich in growth factors, the signaling proteins your body relies on to renew skin, hair follicles, and connective tissue. What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma is made from a small sample of your own blood. We draw the sample, then place it in a centrifuge that separates the blood components by weight and concentrates the platelets into a small volume of plasma. As the Cleveland Clinic explains, the centrifuge “spins and separates your blood components by weight, removing blood cells and concentrating the platelets,” and those platelets contain growth factors that support tissue repair.

Platelets do more than help blood clot. They carry growth factors that signal surrounding cells to rebuild collagen and renew tissue. By concentrating those platelets and delivering them where you need support, PRP gives your body a richer supply of its own repair signals. The Cleveland Clinic notes that PRP injections can support recovery in tissues that have been slow to respond.

Because the material is autologous, meaning it comes from you, there is no donor product involved and no risk of your immune system rejecting it. This is one of the reasons PRP has been studied across so many areas of medicine, from hair restoration to joint care. The same biology that helps a wound recover is concentrated and aimed at the tissue you want to renew.

Where PRP can help

TIFAAR uses PRP to support several goals:

Hair restoration. Growth factors delivered to the scalp can support follicle health and the hair growth cycle. PRP is one of the more studied non-drug options for thinning hair. A systematic review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found that the majority of clinical trials reported positive effects for androgenetic alopecia, with 84% of studies showing benefit and no major side effects, while also noting that results vary because a single standardized protocol is still lacking (NIH / PMC review).

Skin rejuvenation. Paired with microneedling, PRP is used to support collagen production for tone and texture, sometimes called a PRP facial. The evidence here is honest and still developing: a 2024 randomized split-face study found PRP did not clearly outperform saline for facial aging in older women, so we treat skin rejuvenation as a supportive option rather than a guaranteed result, and we set expectations accordingly (NIH / PMC study).

Joint and soft-tissue recovery. Injected into a joint or tendon area, PRP supports the body’s natural recovery process. The evidence for soft-tissue use is mixed: an umbrella review of systematic reviews in Blood Transfusion found that benefits for muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries were small and inconsistent, which is why we set careful expectations (NIH / PMC umbrella review). For the knee in particular, a 2025 review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine described PRP as a “promising and well-tolerated option for early to moderate” knee osteoarthritis, while noting the evidence is mixed and depends heavily on how the PRP is prepared (NIH / PMC review).

PRP and exosomes: how they compare

PRP’s strength is that it is entirely your own biology and is well established in clinical use. Its main limitation is that the growth-factor concentration varies from person to person and even from one preparation to the next, which is part of why study results differ. For people who want a higher, more consistent dose of growth factors, we also offer exosome therapy. Neither option is automatically “better.” During your consultation we recommend the approach that fits your specific goal, whether that is hair, skin, or joint support.

Preparation. We draw a small blood sample and concentrate your platelets in the centrifuge.

Is PRP safe?

Because PRP is made from your own blood, the safety profile is favorable and the risk of an allergic reaction to the material is very low. This autologous nature is consistently cited as one of PRP’s key advantages, since there is no foreign donor product to react against. The most common experiences are temporary and mild: redness, swelling, or tenderness at the treated area that typically settles on its own.

We screen for contraindications before any procedure, and Dr. Perlman oversees every plan. PRP is not right for everyone, and part of a responsible consultation is telling you when another approach would serve you better.

What results can you expect?

Regenerative processes build gradually, and results vary by person.

It is worth being candid about what the research shows. PRP has the strongest, most consistent track record for hair restoration, a reasonable and growing body of evidence for early-to-moderate joint support, and more mixed evidence for facial skin rejuvenation. Because the strength of your own platelets affects the outcome, two people can respond differently to the same protocol. We set time-based expectations and review your progress at each visit, and we adjust the plan rather than push a fixed number of sessions.
